Play and Learning

Jolly Phonics is a fun and child centered approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, this multi-sensory method is very motivating for children and teachers.

Jolly Phonics is a big part of learning to read and write, we use Jolly Phonics to teach each child the correct sound for a letter and the correct formation, this then in turn allows children the opportunity to write their own names.

To teach Jolly Phonics each room has their own set of flash cards, the children learn the letters in sets and each letter has an action to correspond to the letter.

As children progress into the preschool room Jolly Phonics takes a more central focus in the child’s learning. The children begin to learn Jolly Phonics through outdoor play, messy play, phonic book and phonic worksheets. Children are encouraged to listen to sounds and to segment them into letters.

At the moment children are using Billy’s box which is where we use a teddy bear and songs to help them blend letters and make words, this is where we use real objects and match them to the letters.

We also promote many Jolly Phonic songs and music, we listen to and learn the Jolly Phonic CD and songs, we have also created our own Jolly Phonic songs personal to us such as ‘I spy names’ & ‘what is..?’

Children’s physical development is encouraged by our daily ‘Healthy Heart’ times, where we all love to run! Children also have the opportunity to use bikes, balls, P.E apparatus and in the summer months swim.

“Managers and staff provide a highly inclusive setting. Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities make very good progress. Children settle quickly into this inviting and welcoming setting. They form positive relationships with staff and their friends. Children show high levels of confidence and independence.”
